The guided tour of the beauties adorning the shores of Lake Como will lead you back in time, discovering the seventeenth century Villa Carlotta, the gardens of Villa Monastero and the mysterious Church of San Giorgio in Mandello del Lario, which can be visited exclusively with Milanoguida.
The ferry ride on Lake Como, the perfect moment to admire the extraordinary naturalistic landscapes that surround the lake, will take us to Villa Carlotta, famous for the art collection inside and for the precious terraced botanical garden that accommodates more than 500 species of plants: secular coniferous trees, citrus pergolas, camellias hedges, azaleas, rhododendrons, tropical plants, palms, cedars, the Bamboo Garden and the Southern Ferns Valley.
The noble Villa nestling on the lake boasts a collection of works by great Masters, acquired following the passage of the property from Clerici to Gianbattista Sommariva at the beginning of 800, deserving to have made it famous throughout Europe attracting illustrious visitors such as Stendhal, Lady Morgan and Flaubert.
It is still possible to be lost by admiring the sculptures by Canova and the Danish Thorvaldsen, the canvas “Virgil reads the sixth song of the Aeneid” by the French Jean-Baptiste Wicar and Hayez’s masterpiece, “The last farewell of Romeo and Juliet” of 1823, Manifesto of the rising romantic painting in Italy.
The journey to discover the Villas and wonders of Lake Como will continue to the extraordinary gardens of Villa Monastero, discovering more than two kilometers of botanical rarities from all over the world.
The species, adorning the garden with colors and aromas, that are more than 900, have inspired over the years also artists and poets such as Paolo Emilio Dé Busi called the Parlaschino that in ‘ 600 wrote: “cypress, laurels, cedars, green lovers/say that valuable and thousand merits/precedes the Tornese Pliniana (…) /its sizes (are) flowers and fruits “.
We will visit the Church of San Giorgio in Mandello, open exclusively for Milanoguida, construction of the 13th century with mysterious origins, perhaps founded by a crusader returning from the Holy Land or a member of the Order of the Templars... The interior is decorated with amazing frescoes that cover most of the walls, the triumphal arch and the bottom of the presbytery.
With the guided tour “Villas and wonders of Lake Como” you will discover one of the most beloved landscapes by the great scholar Alessandro Manzoni among villas that conceal treasures, breathtaking views, naturalistic jewels and Lombard history in an immersion in landscapes and emotions that will remain etched in the heart.
