The abbey of Morimondo was founded in 1134 by monks from Morimond in France and was the first Cistercian abbey built in Lombardy. Passed almost unscathed by subsequent modifications, it still preserves its original Gothic architecture, declined in an austere solemnity and in an impressive majesty.
The abbey develops on four floors, exploiting a terracing obtained from the ground. The entire structure, almost unchanged, includes the church, the cloister, the chapter house, the monks’ cells, the refectory and the scriptorium.
The guided tour will take you to the discovery of the entire abbey complex, winding through the interior of the church, where you can admire fifteenth and sixteenth-century frescoes, beautiful liturgical furnishings such as the holy water font of the fourteenth century and above all the magnificent inlaid wooden chair of the sixteenth century, the cloister and the rooms dedicated to the monastic life, including the scriptorium, made accessible by the recent restoration.
An opportunity to discover the origins of Gothic architecture and immerse yourself in the daily life of inhabitants and guardians of this splendid complex, where art, history and religion are perfectly combined.
SPECIAL! Discover the beauties of Morimondo: on the same days when the guided historical-artistic visit to the Abbey of Morimondo is organized, it will also be possible to take part in the naturalistic guided tour of “Marcite di Morimondo”.
