The city of Mantua, one of the main centers of the Italian and European Renaissance, was included in 2008 in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and in 2016 received the title of Italian Capital of Culture.
In the 12th century the Lombard city was surrounded by four lakes, useful above all for defensive purposes, and this conformation lasted until the 17th century when a flood changed the structure of the territory, leading the city to take the form of a peninsula. The water mirrors taken from the Mincio river give the city a particular aspect, almost magical …
We will go to the discovery of the famous Camera Picta, known as Camera degli Sposi, located inside the Castle of San Giorgio, dedicated to Ludovico III Gonzaga and his wife Barbara of Brandenburg and considered the masterpieces of Andrea Mantegna. Afterwards we will cross the streets of the historic center until we reach Piazza Sordello where there is the new archaeological promenade where it is possible to admire the remains of the Roman Domus, which emerged during the excavation works in 2006. The visit continues to discover the Basilica of Sant ‘Andrea, the largest church in Mantua, by Leon Battista Alberti, in whose crypt is kept the relic of the Blood of Christ brought into the city by the Roman centurion Longinus. In one of the chapels there is also the funeral monument of Andrea Mantegna. We will also admire the Rotunda of San Lorenzo, the oldest church in the city, built in the 11th century during the Canossa domination. True city treasure, the “Palazzo dei lucidi inganni”, known as Palazzo Te, was built on commission by Federico II Gonzaga for his entertainment. The palace is rich in symbols and myths that stand out in the wonderfully frescoed halls such as the illustrious Hall of the giants and that of Love and Psyche and, not least, the Hall of horses that celebrates the Gonzaga stables at that time famous throughout Europe.
The guided tour in Mantua will be an opportunity to discover the Lombard city through the indelible traces of a history-filled past.
