111 km on what, in southern Etruria, was the Roman road of communication between Viterbo, Vetralla, Sutri and Rome: it is Via Cassia, a modern state road today. Centuries later, during the Middle Ages, the same route became the final part of the “pilgrims’ journey”, the Via Romea or Francigena that connected Canterbury to Rome. The stories of the peoples who have come and gone in this marvelous land between Tuscany and Lazio will be retraced, with stops in quiet villages, silent convents and cheerful inns. A journey of beauty and joy.
It is advisable to arrive in Viterbo the night before
1st DAY From Viterbo to Vetralla – 21 km – travel time 6 hours – medium
After visiting the city of Popes, we set off on the Francigena through the mysterious “Etruscan cave streets”, dug out of the living rock. The vast spaces of the swamps open up to our eyes step by step. Ancient paths will lead us to Vetralla. Accommodation in one of our specialized facilities, dinner and overnight stay.
2nd DAY From Vetralla to Capranica – 20 km – travel time 5 hours – easy
We slowly leave the monumental hazelnut and chestnut woods to discover, hidden by the vegetation, ancient mausoleums that tell stories of Romans and paladins. Capranica, with the typical structure obtained on a tuffaceous hill, marks the end of the stage. Accommodation in one of our specialized facilities, dinner and overnight stay.
3rd DAY From Capranica to Monterosi – 20 km – travel time 5 hours – medium
From the medieval village of Capranica, through dirt roads and fairytale woods, we will arrive at the ancient Etruscan-Roman amphitheater, carved from tuff rock. The journey continues in the direction of the Roman countryside: between dirt and panoramic sections we approach the “eternal city”. Accommodation in one of our specialized facilities, dinner and overnight stay.
4TH DAY From Monterosi to Campagnano – 16 km – travel time 6 hours – easy
Among sacred forests and forgotten cities, we approach the present destination: the village of Campagnano perched on the tuff cliff, which preserves its ancient appearance. Accommodation in one of our specialized facilities, dinner and overnight stay.
5th DAY From Campagnano to La Storta – 22 km – travel time 6 hours – medium
The Valle del Sorbo, a remnant of nature, accompanies us – with the route finally safe – towards the heart of the Vejo Park; ancient tombs and majestic tumuli surround the countryside. A small village, Isola Farnese, has dominated the gorge rich in vegetation for millennia. Accommodation in one of our specialized facilities, dinner and overnight stay.
6TH DAY From La Storta to Rome – 12 km – travel time 5 hours – easy
Among unexpected country handkerchiefs, where nature has managed to survive almost intact, we approach Rome. Ascending to Monte Mario, the sacred city will appear to us in all its beauty. Arriving at the Vatican, we will receive the Testimonium, which certifies our journey.
