Our guided tour will make you discover Monza, an important Lombard city that has never lost its importance over the centuries: we will visit the Duomo, founded in the 6th century and visible today in its Gothic form, which houses the Iron Crown, precious relic with which the European emperors were crowned by Charlemagne to Napoleon, built using a nail from the Cross of Christ.
The sumptuous chapel where the Iron Crown is kept is decorated with one of the most splendid fresco cycles of international Gothic, which tells the story of Queen Teodolinda, the foundation of the Duomo and the history of the Lombard people. Thanks to the very recent restoration and to a new lighting system of the chapel it is now possible to admire the work of the Zavattari workshop to the fullest.
The visit continues with the annexed Museum of the Treasure of the Cathedral, which houses the world’s most important collection of late antique and Longobard goldsmith works, which one of the most important pieces is the famous “Chioccia con Pulcini”. The collection also boasts a good repertoire of medieval and Renaissance objects, sculptures and paintings, ending with works by Lucio Fontana.
It’s also includes a visit to the center of Monza where the bulk of the Arengario building stands out, the seat of power in the municipal age.
