“Of my works, the one I like best is the House that I had built in Milan to welcome the old singing artists not favored by fortune, or who did not have the virtue of savings as young people. Poor and dear companions of my life! “.
These are the words that Giuseppe Verdi uses to describe his last masterpiece: the Rest Home for Musicians in Milan.
Commissioned by Giuseppe Verdi between 1896 and 1899 and built by the architect Camillo Boito, this extraordinary neo-Gothic building was the last great effort of the master of Busseto shortly before he died in Milan and tells an original story and atmosphere. evocative, in which the visitor is lowered into a past and dreamy time.
The Rest Home for Musicians, better known with the simple name of “Casa Verdi” is a unique structure of its kind, fundamental pole of the history of Milan, as well as a unique museum that covers not only the life of Verdi and his wife Giuseppina Strepponi, but also of all those who lived in this house and paid homage to the Master. In fact, they can be found from personal objects to monogrammed GV furnishings, from art collections showing very valuable pieces such as the busts of Vincenzo Gemito or the famous portrait of Verdi by Giovanni Boldini, up to the plaster casts of the face and hand of Giuseppe Verdi .
The master, who died at the Hotel de Milan on 27 January 1901, received solemn funerals that temporarily accompanied him to the Monumental Cemetery, from where the body was then transferred to rest with his wife in the wonderful crypt of the Rest Home for Musicians, masterfully decorated from the mosaics of Lodovico Pogliaghi.
The first guests entered the Verdi house in 1902 and since then, the structure has welcomed more than a thousand people including musicians, choristers, choreographers, conductors, orchestras and singers, making use of the contributions of the many donors, in addition to the proceeds of the rights of the works of Verdi, whom the master himself, by testamentary will, destined for the maintenance and operation of his home for musicians.
The guided tour of Casa Verdi will illustrate the architectural aspects, the historical context and the works of art exhibited inside the house, adding to the story the more purely musical aspects of the life and poetry of Giuseppe Verdi and his beautiful “Casa” , creating an all-round immersion in Verdi’s creation.
