Located at the feet of Berici Hills and crossed by Bacchiglione river, Vicenza combines the evocative naturalistic context with a rich artistic and architectural heritage that makes it one of the most fascinating cities in Northern Italy. The city of Berica is linked to the figure of the Paduan architect Andrea Palladio who built his most important buildings here, from Basilica to Teatro Olimpico, whose conspicuous presence in Vicenza was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. The guided tour in Vicenza and the exhibition “The triumph of color” will lead you to discover the history and artistic beauties of the city and its surroundings, alongside a rich city itinerary to visit the villas La Rotonda and Valmarana ai Nani and an important exhibition dedicated to one of the most fortunate seasons of Venetian painting.

The discovery of the city starts from the tour of the historic center during which we will pause to visit the Duomo, a late 13th century building with a unique facade of polychrome marbles dating back to the 15th century and the church of Santa Corona, which houses in its sober interior two vertices of 16th century Venetian painting, such as the Baptism of Christ by Giovanni Bellini and the Adoration of Magi by Paolo Veronese and, at the main chapel, an astonishing altar entirely decorated with inlays of marble and semi-precious stones. The city itinerary continues along Andrea Palladio course, corresponding to the Roman city decumano, and through Piazza dei Signori, city spaces overlooked by the most important buildings designed by Andrea Palladio, the architect born in Padova in 1508 who outlined a concept of classicism destined to be of inspiration in the centuries to follow. Among these, Palazzo Thiene Bonin Longare, the imposing Palladian Basilica and Loggia dei Capitaniato. The Palladian itinerary is enriched by two masterpieces of the architect’s maturity: the Olympic Theater, the oldest stable theater of the modern age, with the monumental marble proscenium and the fixed scenes made by Vincenzo Scamozzi after the death of the master and Villa Capra Valmarana.

Situated in a scenic position on a south hill of the historic center, the villa, better known as La Rotonda, qualifies as a building with a perfect square, marked on each facade by elegant columns that recall Greek temples. Inside, a majestic central dome overlooks a circular hall with richly decorated balconies with lavish allegorical and mythological frescoes by the French Louis Dorigny.

Villa Valmarana ai Nani rises non far from Rotonda. Named for the statues that once adorned the park and now surmount the fence, the complex, built between the 17th and 18th centuries, consists of three structures: Palazzina, Foresteria and Scuderie. The first two embellished with frescoes by Giambattista Tiepolo and his son Giandomenico, admired over time by the famous visitors of life starting from Goethe. In the Palazzina Giambattista Tiepolo paints magnificent scenes taken from the masterpieces of ancient and modern literature such as the Iliad, the Aeneid, the Orlando Furioso and the Jerusalem. In the Guest House his son Giandomenico reveals his talent testing himself in the most disparate subjects, from the realistic peasant scenes with extravagant oriental evocations up to the very original scene of Venice Carnival.

The luminous art of Giambattista Tiepolo returns to the leading role within the exhibition “Il Trionfo del colore. From Tiepolo to Canaletto and Guardi. Vicenza and the masterpieces from the Pushkin Museum in Moscow”. Set up in the two exhibition venues of Palazzo Chiericati and the Gallerie d’Italia – Palazzo Leoni Montanari, the exhibition illustrates the development of Venetian art of the 18th century and its impact on European art, ranging from the protagonists of sacred and mythological painting such as Giambattista Tiepolo and Giambattista Piazzetta, to the great interpreters of landscape painting such as Canaletto e Bellotto up to the original figure of Pietro Longhi who in his brightly colored small paintings and from the refined technique, tells us a slice of Venetian life in the 18th century. An unmissable opportunity to admire over 60 works from the Civic Museums of Vicenza and the prestigious Puskin Museum in Moscow.

Among elegant and majestic palaces and paintings full of light and color, the trip to Vicenza will make you discover a city and a territory rich in history and beauty, where the happy encounter between the refined taste and the sensitivity of illustrious families, important ecclesiastics and prestigious city institutions and the work of great artists and architects has given life to masterpieces worthy of appearing in the World Heritage Sites.
