Description

The guided tour of Piacenza will lead us to discover the rich history of the city, a real jewel of art and culture that preserves Romanesque treasures but also important works of the Italian 20th century and the medieval village of Grazzano Visconti, a magical place curious where history and legend mix together giving the village the great charm that characterizes it.

Located on the banks of Po, in the shadow of the Ligurian Apennines, Piacenza is one of the oldest settlements in the Po Valley, inhabited by Ligurians, Etruscans and Celts. Together with Cremona, it was the first Roman colony of Northern Italy which, later becoming Lombard and also, in the 16th century, the capital of the dukedom of Parma and Piacenza, that preserves the great wonders of Italian history, art and culture.

We will visit the splendid Romanesque church of Sant’Antonino, founded in the 4th century and characterized by the curious polygonal tower and Sala dei Teatini, an ancient church transformed in an auditorium, full of frescoes made between 17th and 19th century. Then we will go to the discovery of Piacenza’s Cathedral, one of the most important examples of Romanesque buildings in Italy, whose interior has been enriched over the centuries, of masterpieces created by Procaccini, Ludovico Carracci, Guido Reni and the splendid dome of Guercino.

Walking through the city center, we will cross the 13th century Piazza Cavalli admiring the equestrian statues that have become the symbol of the city and some fascinating buildings: the Gothic Palace, the Governor’s Palace and the church of San Francesco.

We will conclude the guided tour in Piacenza with the collection of Ricci Oddi Modern Art Gallery, which includes some of the greatest masterpieces of 19th and 20th century art, including Place d’Anvers Paris of the Italian impressionist Federico Zandomeneghi, Sunset (Burning Bush) of Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo, Cavalry Stop of Giovanni Fattori and works of great masters such as Hayez, Segantini, Previati, Boldini, Boccioni, De Pisis, Carrà, Wildt, De Chirico and Klimt.

After the lunch break, in which we can dedicate ourselves to tasting the excellent Piacenza culinary tradition, we will leave for the medieval village of Grazzano Visconti, where it will seem to have been catapulted back in the centuries.

Built at the end of the 14th century by Giovanni Anguissola, to live with his wife Beatrice Visconti, sister of Gian Galeazzo, founder of the Duomo di Milano, the village with its splendid Castle and the ancient church of Sant’Anna became the property in the 19th century where Visconti of Modrone family oversaw the restoration and enlarged the surface to build a small village in neo-medieval style designed by the architect Alfredo Campanini, a great exponent of the Liberty in Milan. The guided tour of the medieval village of Grazzano Visconti will also be an opportunity to access the artisan shops and immerse yourself in an atmosphere of times among curiosities, legends, traditions and signs of Italian history.

The guided tour in Piacenza and the medieval village of Grazzano Visconti will make us spend a day among the excellences of Italy, cradled in times gone by and pampered by the historical, artistic and landscape beauties of Emilia Romagna.
