Guided tour of the city of Parma, ancient capital of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza (1545 – 1859), of which significant traces are still visible today. Defined in the XVIII century as “the Athens of Italy” thanks to an important development in the artistic and institutional field, today the Emilian city is trying to establish itself as a traditional small capital.

The tour to discover the city will begin on the Lungo Parma, the promenade that runs along the Parma river, after which you will reach the Pilotta, a Renaissance complex of buildings in the city center that today houses the National Gallery, the Archaeological Museum, the Palatine Library and the Farnese Theater. They are part of the collection of the National Gallery: La Scapigliata by Leonardo da Vinci, Assumption of the Virgin by Sandro Botticelli besides works by Tiepolo, Parmigianino, Correggio and Canova.

Around Duomo, an example of Romanesque architecture built on the foundations of an early Christian basilica, is the fulcrum of the city where the main religious monuments of the city are located. After visiting the Duomo and its Baptistery, we will discover the Abbey of San Giovanni Evangelista, a Benedictine complex made up of a church, a monastery and an old spicery. Inside the church you can admire the masterful paintings by Correggio that depicting Saint John and the eagle and The Ascension of Christ and frescoes by Parmigianino.

The next day, away from Parma, we will discover two unique places in the neighboring areas. The walk through the Labyrinth of the Masone, the largest labyrinth in the world, made with over 200,000 bamboo canes and created by Franco Maria Ricci in 2015, will be a unique experience, an opportunity for reflection full of charm. The buildings of the Labyrinth of Masone, designed by Pier Carlo Bontempi, are inspired by classical forms, by Italian and European traditions but also recall visions and fantasies. Right in the evocative location of the Labyrinth of the Masone we will have the opportunity to enjoy a typical Parmesan lunch revisited in a gourmet key at Al Bambù Restaurant, managed by the starred chef Massimo Spigaroli.

Then we will visit the magical medieval village of Castell’Arquato known for Rocca Viscontea of 14th century and for Collegiate Church of Santa Maria. Famous for its beautiful “Portico del Paradiso”, an interesting Romanesque work, the Collegiata is finely decorated with frescoes that we can admire thanks to the discovery made by a professor of the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera who, in 1899, discovered the paintings in the chapel dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria and restored them giving the splendor they still transmit today.

Celebrated by Stendhal in his “Chartreuse de Parme” and by Marcel Proust in the “Du côté de chez Swann”, today capital of Italian opera theater and of Emilian gastronomy, Parma is a city to discover…
